My Story

I have had a lot of de-programming to do over the years. Some of this was from family or TV (I’m Gen X, there was no instagram in the ‘90s) and some of it was from companies I worked for.  

Sometimes corporate speak – ‘cut the fat’, ‘lift and shift’, ‘evangelist’, ‘dead wood’, ‘resources’, ‘lackey’, ‘yes-man’, ‘blocker’, ‘master’, ‘servant-leadership’ – when taken out of our context is just kind of creepy (ok, I want to say gothic or colonial or oligarchy but creepy kinda just covers it for now).  

It seeps into our DNA. 

It can be a form of aggression that we are not even aware of.  

To write a book, to start a business was to overcome a lifetime of programming –  being taught a government job was safest, that the way to get ahead was to wear a power suit and have super BIG hair (hello 80’s ladies!!) while working for a CORPORATION and that speaking up is a CLM (Career Limiting Move). 

I have lots of techniques I use to ‘trick’ myself out of these robotic ways of operating and to help me be more open and curious.  

This is the key mindset that helps me to be creative and stay true to myself.   It helps me to apply for jobs, ask for a promotion, ask for a pay rise, build a business and write a book (and so much more!!)

Keep reading below for some simple prompts to help you with your own de-programming.  This will help you to stay open so that you can get crystal clear on what YOU MOST WANT to do next.  

Activity – Create your own beautiful Mindset Re-set list

What you say in your head matters. 

Create a list of five positives to read through when your old negative thoughts and stories are overwhelming you. 

Can’t think of five positives? 

Here are some ideas to prompt you:

  • List down 5 of your top strengths
  • Write down 3 reasons why you are great at your job
  • Reflect on all of your achievements and create a best of list
  • Note down any affirmations that always shift your mood instantly
  • Contemplate what you are most grateful for, write it down!

Choose five of the best AND WRITE THEM DOWN!  

Have it handy when you need it most.  (Tip: Add it into your notes app or write them on a post-it and stick the post-it on your mirror.)

If you add to this list weekly (especially with any positive feedback you get) you will create something that is truly beautiful and 100% just for you.

My own story

When I was nearing my (wanted) retrenchment from ANZ six years ago, I spent more time supporting my team to get new roles than I did on my own advancement. I was tired, stressed, renovating a house at the same time.  

It was just overwhelming. I was suffering decision-fatigue, lacked energy and had NO IDEA what I was going to do next
.

I talked about changing professions to teaching, I  day-dreamed about owning my own business but had no idea in what, I talked to recruiters butall I really wanted to do was lie down – for a long time! 

Which is pretty much what happened. For weeks after ‘freedom day’ I lay on my couch watching Agatha Christie and Pirout Murder mysteries waiting for my energy to return.  

Looking back, I think my energy would have been best spent focusing on networking, building my non-ANZ contacts, not renovating!!, re-energising myself by focusing on my health and fitness (and I really wish I’d discovered a meditation practice then not a few years later.)  But that is re-writing history.  

I’ve now worked with clients who suffer similar challenges.Lots of experience, lots of time spent at one employer, lots of confusion and anxiety, pressure to make a great decision, fuzziness in the mind. 


Get super clear

This is a 3-part email series to help give you ways of getting the energy and momentum you need to get crystal clear on what you really want to do next.


Activity 1 – Make a GREAT Decision

Chose your next step by making a great decision. Use these activities to narrow down your options.  If you’re like me, your experience can be overwhelming. There are lots of roles I could do but not that many that I would really LOVE to do.  

Focus on what you LOVE to do.

  1. Create a list of all the next options for you
  2. Define why (for leaving)
  3. Define your why for the next role (they could be same but worth contemplating if different)
  4. Free write on your ask for the next role – include values, projects, role scope, level of autonomy as well as notes on salary expectation, working conditions,  seniority, work environment, potential boss
  5. List down all the companies you want to work with and for (and why!)
  6. List down all the industry types you want to work in
  7. List down all your kick ass skills – those skills you love to use, learn more of and show off with (you know what they are)
  8. Review your lists and match up the jobs that let you be kick ass everyday. 
  9. Match up those companies and industries where being kick ass is going to be possible. 
  10. Match job to companies and industries  
  11. Select 1 or 2 jobs and companies to focus on and then start applying for roles, connecting with your network who work in these companies or role. 

Find out as much as you can, make yourself visible, apply for roles and keep going until you get that job!

Want to get a promotion?

Use a framework
The best approach is to really have a structured framework that you’re working towards which you can read more in my book “I’m Ready Now! – A Guide for Getting a Promotion”.  This framework involved 10 steps to get that promotion.

Know Your Role
Know exactly what position or positions you’re going for and why you want to go for them.

Pathways
Identify your pathways to a promotion.

Is your company very focused on formal pathways where you need to go to several interviews or is it better to network away into a promotion or maybe a combination?

Have a look at the last two years of promotions into the roles that you want to go into and see how people have successfully got into those roles.

Don’t pursue pathways that are not proven to be ones that actually work for people to get into those jobs.

Current State Assessment
Do a current state assessment so look around your environment and work out who the key influencers, stakeholders, and decision makers are in the promotion process. Make sure that you’ve got those people onboard and working for you in terms of getting a promotion.

Create A Plan
The next thing is to do is actually create a plan. Sit down and work through a plan on how you’re actually going to spend your time working towards a promotion and give yourself a timeframe of three to six months and tasks that you’re going to pursue every single week to get there.

Be Flexible
The next step is to really monitor, revise, adapt your plan and check in. Check in weekly to see how your plan is going and if you’re progressing well to that plan. Also, give yourself a timeframe to say when you’re going to stop pursuing a promotion in your current department or workplace and to start looking outside your organisation.

Network
I also really recommend within that plan to make sure that you are doing some level of external networking outside your existing department or company so that you have different options open if a promotion does not become available to you in the timeframe you want so that you can pursue a promotion somewhere else.

Have a contingency plan
Have contingency options in place so you don’t get a promotion in six months you know what you’ll do instead?

What is your next strategy?

Reflection
If you do end up getting that promotion take some time to reflect, appreciate and take learnings on what you would do or repeat next time you’re going for a promotion.

Don’t Stop
The other tip I would give you is as soon as you get in your  next promotion, start working towards your next one.

Understand your timeframes
If you haven’t been working towards a promotion and now you’ve started it generally takes a minimum of 6 to 12 if not 18 months to make that promotion happen. Particularly if you have to do it through informal ways such as networking as these networks can take a long time to build.

Visibility is the key to career progression

Ever found yourself getting these kind of comments in a performance review:

  • ‘They’ don’t know who you are
  • No one has heard of you, so I couldn’t get you that bonus / promotion ?
  • What do you do exactly?
  • Maybe I should sit with you, to see why you are SO busy?
  • I just don’t get what you do?

Visibility is the key to career progression. 

What is it that the ‘people with power’ don’t know about you?

How are you making yourself and your work visible?

This isn’t about a name tag.

This is about your work being known.

Here are 9 tips to help you be MORE visible:

  1. Identify the people that you want to know who you are and what you do
  2. Find a way to increase the face time you regularly have with these people. You could work on a project of theirs, attend social events that they attend, grab a moment to talk to them, attend a talk or workshop they are running, find opportunities to be seen and heard
  3. Circle back – after receiving advice, come back to that person and let them know how using their the advice went and what it meant for you and your work
  4. Status reports – be the one to send out the regular status report, so your name and key information is always popping into the right inboxes (delegate the formatting, the collation but not the high vis opportunity)
  5. Run a workshop, seminar, talk series or other event. You don’t have to be the one talking, just be the one organising (and the name popping up in the inbox, the person visibly asking for interest and ideas).
  6. Organise a charity event, help out with organising an off-site (of course only do this for events that you are genuinely interested in.)
  7. Use random down time, to your advantage – nothing says ambitious like swinging by a senior managers desk when you’re computer is ‘getting repaired’ than ‘hey, I’ve got half an hour spare is there anything I can do for you that doesn’t involve a computer – photocopying, grabbing them a coffee or lunch, chasing up something with someone on another floor.)   You don’t want to be seen as an admin clerk or dog’s body so don’t get into the habit of routine tasks. Make sure each time you up level the task but also have humility when the boss really does need a coffee (tip : they will always be grateful if you remember the order).
  8. Put your hand up for extra projects
  9. Celebrate successes as visibly as possible.

Too Busy?

Find a way to delegate non-essential work to your direct reports and 2IC.

No one to delegate to?

Find time and the budget to increase the size of your team.

No budget for increasing your team?

Then its time to get some budget and show off your negotiating and influencing skills.

Alternatively, look over your workload and really assess what is core and non-core aspects of your role.  Opening up just an hour a week for networking and increasing your visibility will make a big difference.

Is there a non-essential task that can be dropped or completed less often?

Its time to go after what you want and to stop ‘making do with what you’ve got’.

How to get a YES when you ask for promotion

I used to wait to be asked, now I ask to be promoted.  This has taken a huge mental and skill shift to take this approach. Some people around you may say this lacks integrity but how is waiting to be ‘discovered’ and holding yourself back, lacking integrity ?

People who want a recording contract – perform, compete on a talent show, run YouTube channels and busk.

People wanting a promotion do not wait, they stand out and they ask.

Timing

Ask when promotion, new jobs and opportunities are available. If there is a lull in available jobs, practice the following skills and techniques to boost your chance of the being no. 1 pick when jobs do come up again.

Credibility

Know your business case and know your ask  and work on making this visible to the ‘powers that be’.

Be the Obvious Choice

The right role is the easiest role – apply for and show interest in the roles that most easily match your ambition, skill sets and connections.

Visibility

Make your work visible and in demand (I will write more on this next month but for now, I have included some tips at the end of this post).

We want you!

Make your future leadership team and peers want you on their team!!

You know the ‘vibe’ is good when you start hearing things from senior management like:

“How do I find the right role for you, so you say yes”

“I NEED you on my team”

“We’re so glad you’re here”

“You’re wasted in that role, you should be doing XYZ role”

“They really have great THINGS to say about you”

Advocate

Find someone to advocate for you who is on hiring and promotion panels. This person could be influential with a potential sponsor or may hire directly as well.

In a hiring decision, who will recommend you if asked to provide an opinion on you?

Sponsor

Find someone that you would like to work for and talk to them about your ambitions. Apply for roles working with them and keep yourself and your work visible to this potential sponsor.

Who wants you on their team right now?

Influence

Make your ambition visible and known to people who are influential with hiring managers but may not be in formal positions of power. Talk through your business case and pitch and ask them for advice. Ask for help to gain a promotion.

What role do people see you in next?

Increase your visibility through celebration!

Celebrate successes and draw people into your success.

Celebrate team successes frequently and invite advocates and sponsors to these events.

Create a winning vibe !

Persevere!

Keep asking.

Keep asking.

Keep asking.

Repeat until you have it! (And then start working towards your next one!!)

One bad chapter does not mean your story is over

Don’t let a bad boss, a bad role or bad employer make you give up on your ambition!
Go for it anyway!
PS – and move on as quickly as possible, don’t linger in a bad role so long you lose your ambition or will to live.
PPS –  and if you have a bully for a boss, colleague or your direct reports are ganging up on you, just get the hell out of there and don’t look back!!

Do you want to get a promotion ? Here’s how…

Asking for a promotion can be super scary.

Why?

Because you will be making it very clear and very public that you are ambitious, have career goals and are prepared to go for them.

This can feel and be very exposing.

This is your opportunity to showcase your skills and lay the foundation for career progression at your current employer.

Got for it!

And, to help you go for it, here is my tried and very personally tested advice for getting that promotion time and time again!

Be Clear On Your Ask

  • Know which roles you are interested in
  • Know how much money you want in the form of salary and incentives
  • Know your why – why are you the right person to be promoted, what are your skills and what do you have to offer (have your sales pitch ready)
  • Know what you want to achieve in the new role for your company, business area and yourself
  • Know how you would achieve these things
  • Also, have a list of any working arrangements that you need considered and accomodated in the new role (i.e.: work from home, start times, limits on travel, if any etc)

Know Who To Ask

In I’m Ready Now! I wrote about how to identify and influence the key decision makers.
Make sure you know who can make decisions on promotion (this is not always your boss) and when they can make these decisions.

Know When to Ask

Ask for promotion when :

  1. You have already talked through your business case with your immediate boss and any key decision makers
  2. Achieved any action items that were asked for as part of your business case discussion
  3. Have held a discussion on the value you can bring to the new role
  4. You have spoken and gained advice from at least 30% of the leadership team you want to belong to, and
  5. Made your work visible to that leadership team

Other great times to ask are :

  • when you’ve delivered a big win for your company
  • when a new job becomes available due to a re-org
  • when someone departs a role unexpectedly

What will you do if you get a YES?

Have a celebration plan in place and, have a business plan in place that you can pick up and run with in your new role.

Always make sure to celebrate a promotion (even it feels like something that should have happened ages ago) and appreciate yourself for the increase wealth, autonomy and freedom a new role will bring you both professionally and personally.

What will you do if you get a NO?

Have a ‘No’ plan in place and a timeframe for getting to YES already determined.

Don’t stay too long in a role going no where.

Only you can determine how long is ‘too long’.

By having a plan in place BEFORE your discussion you won’t get sidetracked by the knock to confidence that a NO can have.

This plan will increase your chances of keeping your career on track and seeing knock backs as bumps a long the road not road blocks
